NADMO has called on Persons with Disabilities (PWDs) to take proactive steps to protect their lives, property and livelihoods during emergencies, particularly floods. The appeal was made by the Director of NADMO's Gender Department, Ms. Rosa Graham, at the annual regional meeting of the National Association of Persons with Disabilities (NAPWD) in Accra. The meeting was held on the theme, "Staying Safe Before, During and After Floods: The Role of Persons with Disabilities in Building Resilience." Addressing participants, Madam Graham emphasised the importance of flood preparedness, describing it as a shared responsibility requiring planning, awareness and community support. She took participants through essential flood safety measures, highlighting the dos and don'ts, before, during and after flooding. According to her, communities can significantly reduce the impact of disasters by planning, staying informed and working together to protect vulnerable groups, including persons with disabilities. Ms. Graham expressed concern about the heightened risks faced by PWDs during emergencies, noting that mobility, communication and accessibility challenges often make rescue and evacuation efforts more difficult. Chairman of the National Association of Persons with Disabilities, Mr. Charles Opare, thanked NADMO for organising the educational session and appealed for enhanced support systems to ensure the safety and well-being of persons with disabilities during emergencies. As a gesture of appreciation, Mr. Opare presented a wheelchair to NADMO on behalf of the association.
