NADMO, in collaboration with ADRA Ghana, Parks and Gardens, GO Energy, Mastercard and the Forestry Commission, has planted approximately 750 trees and donated 100 dustbins to selected schools and institutions in Accra as part of activities marking this year’s International Day for Disaster Risk Reduction (IDDRR). The initiative, anchored on the theme “Resilience Starts at Home,” highlights the importance of environmental responsibility, proper waste management and collective action in strengthening Ghana’s resilience to disasters. The exercise commenced at NADMO’s headquarters, where the Deputy Director-General in charge of Operations, Hon. Teddy Safori Addi, and the Deputy Director-General in charge of Technical, Alhaji Ahmed-Rufai Aggudey, jointly planted the first tree to officially begin the exercise. Led by the Director in charge of the Climate Change Department, Madam Charlotte Norman, the team, accompanied by officers from the Ayawaso East Municipal Assembly, proceeded to selected schools and institutions, including Flagstaff House Basic School, Labone SHS, Accra High SHS, Accra Girls and Borstal Institute for Juveniles to plant additional trees and promote environmental awareness. The exercise witnessed enthusiastic participation from teachers, students and prison officers, who joined the team in planting trees, demonstrating a shared commitment to environmental protection and disaster risk reduction. Addressing teachers and students at the various schools, Alhaji Ahmed Aggudey encouraged them to cultivate the habit of planting and nurturing trees, stressing that environmental conservation was an important component of disaster prevention and preparedness. He noted that although planting trees alone could not eliminate the challenges associated with environmental degradation and disaster risks, it could significantly help mitigate their impacts by improving the environment and contributing to climate resilience. For his part, Hon. Teddy Safori Addi underscored the long-term benefits of the initiative, noting that the trees planted would become increasingly valuable as they matured. He described the exercise as a meaningful investment in a sustainable environment and a disaster-resilient nation. ADRA Ghana, one of the collaborating partners, reaffirmed its commitment to supporting initiatives that strengthen disaster resilience, promote environmental sustainability and contribute to national development. The administrators of the beneficiary schools and institutions expressed appreciation to NADMO and its partners for the initiative. They pledged to safeguard the donated dustbins, maintain the newly planted trees and monitor their growth to ensure the sustainability of the exercise.
