NADMO, in collaboration with stakeholders, marked this year’s International Day for Disaster Risk Reduction (IDDRR) on Tuesday, October 13, 2026, with an exhibition at the United Nations Humanitarian Response Depot (UNHRD) in Accra. Held under the theme “Resilience Starts at Home,” the exhibition provided a platform for knowledge sharing, public education and stakeholder engagement on disaster risk reduction (DRR), highlighting the importance of collective action in building safer and more resilient communities. Speaking on behalf of the UN Resident Coordinator, Ms. Signe Jepsen reaffirmed the United Nations’ commitment to supporting NADMO through technical assistance, capacity building and coordinated interventions to strengthen disaster preparedness and resilience in Ghana. She underscored the important role of stakeholders, including the UN, government institutions, the private sector and local communities, in addressing disaster risks and promoting resilience at the household level. Ms. Jepsen noted that households could not effectively address disaster risks in isolation, stressing the need for collaboration, resource sharing, the exchange of ideas and the development of effective strategies to mitigate the impact of disasters. She also emphasised the importance of household preparedness, noting that having a clear emergency plan could make a life-saving difference during disasters. She further called for resilient construction practices, informed planning and effective early warning systems, supported by strong cooperation among government, the private sector and communities. Alhaji Ahmed-Rufai Aggudey, Deputy Director General in charge of Technical at NADMO, delivered a speech on behalf of the Director General, Major Dr. Joseph Bikanyi Kuyon (Rtd) and described the exhibition as an important avenue for sharing knowledge, showcasing disaster risk reduction initiatives and strengthening partnerships to build a safer Ghana. In her remarks, Madam Charlotte Norman, Director of the Climate Change Adaptation and Disaster Risk Reduction Department at NADMO, stressed that disaster risk reduction was not the sole responsibility of government but a collective undertaking requiring the active participation of individuals, households, communities and institutions. She urged the public to comply with approved building procedures, practise proper waste management and respond promptly to emergency warnings and situations, noting that these actions were essential to protecting lives, property and the environment. The exhibition brought together stakeholders to showcase programmes, innovations, interventions and initiatives aimed at reducing disaster risks and strengthening resilience. It also served as an educational platform to encourage responsible behaviour and promote greater public understanding of disaster prevention and preparedness.
