Background

The Man-Made Disasters Department was set up to handle issues related to human induced disasters. The department is headed by a Chief Disaster Control Officer with nine (9) other supporting staff. The department is made up of four (4) units, namely; Conflict, Environment, Oil and Gas and Accident units.

Functions and Activities

The department:

• Serves as a secretariat to the Man-Made Disasters Technical Advisory Committee to deal with issues related to Man-Made Disasters as well as coordinates the committees quarterly meetings to review and implement activities of the department
• Collaborates with UN agencies in handling Refugee matters and ensures that Returnees are settled
• Ensures that Internally Displaced Persons are settled
• Collaborates with the Ministry of Environment, Science and Technology and other Stake holders on environmental issues
• Collaborates with Ghana Police Service (MTTU) and other stake holders such as NRSC on accident related issues
• Ensures that safety standards in the Oil and Gas Industry are adhered to.
• Collaborates with the UN Agencies like, UNHCR, UNICEF, UNFPA, IOM, WFP and UN Resident Co-ordinators office in the management of refugee related issues
• The department also collaborates with the Relief and Reconstruction department in the management of disaster related issues.

The department also does;

• Regular damage assessment visit to conflict areas to ascertain what needs to be done
• Regular assessment visit to LPG service stations to comply with safety standards
• Regular assessment visit to service providers in the waste management industry
• Periodical visit to Refugee camps to assess their needs
