African Risk Capacity officials visit NADMO

The Africa Risk Capacity-ARC, is a specialized agency of the African Union established in 2012 in South Africa, which specializes in National Disaster Insurance involving droughts and soon floods, have sent a four member delegation to Ghana. The delegation on Thursday 22nd February, 2018 paid a courtesy call on the Director General of the National Disaster Management Organization (NADMO); Hon, Nana Agyeman Prempeh in his office at the NADMO headquarters.

Brief History
ARC enables participating member states to prepare, manage and finance natural disasters. As of today, a total of 32 countries have signed the ARC Establishment Agreement (the “Treaty”) and are members of the ARC Agency. Eight (8) countries have purchased the insurance coverage for drought since the ARC inception. Four (4) countries have received payments from insurance following a significant rainfall deficit.

The delegation briefed the Director General on the need for Ghana to commit to signing up for an insurance policy against drought in the three Northern regions in Ghana so as to mitigate the suffering of the masses in such an eventuality.

The Director General welcomed the team to his office and was pleased the Agency had taken a bold step to help insure against drought for African countries. He was also pleased that the ARC was an African initiative by Africans for African countries with the full backing of the African Union.

The ARC Agency delegation expressed their gratitude and looked forward to a smooth working relationship with NADMO and Ghana in the years ahead.

The delegation had earlier met the Minister for Environment, Science and Technology, Prof. Frimpong Boateng and would be meeting the Ministers for Agriculture and Finance before leaving Ghana.
The African Risk Capacity Delegation included Ms. Eva. Kavuma; Chief Operating Officer of the ARC Agency. Mr. Malvern Chirume; Chief Underwriting Officer, ARC ltd. Ms. Fatou Diagne; ARC Country Engagement Officer.

  • Mrs. Charlotte Norman - Director, Climate Change Adaptation and Disaster Risk Reduction who is also the ARC operational plan focal person for Ghana.
