On Tuesday May 9 2017, Sahara Group, a leading privately owned Oil, Gas and Power infrastructure conglomerate made a cheque donation of Twenty Thousand Ghana cedis (GH₵20,000.00) to the National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO) towards Disaster Risk Reduction.
Speaking at the donation, Mr. Tosin Etomi, Country Director said that “rather than wait for disasters to happen, we would prefer to assist the organisation in the preparedness and timely response effort”. He further added that they need to also, as an organisation, reach out to areas where they operate. He hoped that taking this initiative would encourage others to follow suit.
Honorable Eric Nana Agyemang-Prempeh (Director-General of NADMO) upon receiving this donation thanked Sahara for their kind gesture and said that he was going to commit this donation to the fight against the Army worm invasion currently affecting the Ashanti, Eastern and Brong Ahafo Regions in the wake of the Presidents just launched “planting for food and jobs” initiative.
He also spoke on a project in the pipeline “Catch them Young”, an initiative in which disaster management clubs would be formed in basic, secondary and tertiary institutions. Disaster Management courses would also be incorporated in the educational curricula to train children on Disaster Management and Risk Reduction. It was his hope that Sahara Group would be one of the main sponsors of this initiative.
Commenting on the wrong citing of filing stations he advised that Sahara and other Oil and Gas companies ensure proper citing of their filing stations to mitigate the impact of oil and gas related disasters on surrounding communities.
Present at the donation were some representatives from Sahara Group and NADMO.
