NADMO Paid a Working Visit to NDPC

The National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO) recently visited the National Development Planning Commission (NDPC) to enhance collaboration between the two institutions.

Major (Rtd) Dr. Joseph Bikanyi Kuyon, NADMO's Director General, emphasised the importance of effective collaboration between NADMO and NDPC in managing disaster risks and proposed regular meetings to evaluate their joint efforts.

Dr. Kuyon expressed concern over the lack of a National Disaster Risk Reduction Strategy, stating that “it hinders the efficient management of disasters in the country”.

He called on the NDPC for technical support in developing a comprehensive strategy at the national, regional, and local levels.

Dr. Esther Owusu, Head of Policy Planning, Research, Monitoring, and Evaluation at NADMO, urged the NDPC to advocate for the activation of disaster management committees at all levels, as mandated by the NADMO Act (Act 927, 2016).

She also highlighted that inadequate funding is a significant challenge for NADMO, requesting NDPC's assistance in securing the necessary resources for effective disaster management.

Dr. Audrey Smock Amoah, the Director General of the NDPC, noted that the meeting was timely as her Commission was currently developing new planning guidelines for various sectors and Metropolitan, Municipal, and District Assemblies (MMDAs).

She reaffirmed the importance of collaboration and pledged NDPC's support in creating the National Disaster Risk Reduction Strategy.

Dr. Amoah urged NADMO to enhance its staff's capacity, particularly in local offices, to better understand disasters and contribute to their reduction through strategic planning.

Dr. Felix Addo-Yobo, Head of Policy Planning at NDPC, mentioned that disaster risk reduction considerations have been integrated into new development plans and invited NADMO to join the validation team to ensure comprehensive coverage of these essential aspects.

Representatives from NADMO included Mr. Ahmed-Rufai A. Aguddey, the Deputy Director General for Technical Affairs; Mr. Richard Abredu; and Mr. Frank Dankwa Carboo.

From the NDPC, attendees were Ms. Angela Emefa Kpegah, Mr. William Dokyi Asare, Ms. Sandra Kesse-Amoakoa, Mr. Richard Tweneboah Kodua, Ms. Doris Adjetey, and Mr. Edward Bruce-Lyle.
